Leighton Contractors dominated this year’s Risk Sentinel Awards taking home three of the five awards for their demonstration of excellence in the field of risk management.

The inaugural ceremony, organised by Risk magazine, took place at the Sydney Harbour Marriott on Tuesday night and recognised those companies leading the way in the area of Risk.

The event attracted some of the country’s top risk talent with Leighton Contractors, Macquarie Bank, Qantas Airways and Goodman Fielder all represented across five categories.

Up first was the award for The Best Use of Technology, which recognised the effective and innovative use of technology by risk professionals to deliver improvements for the business.

The gongwent to Leighton Contractors for its comprehensive risk management system, while Macquarie Bank Relationship Banking Division was highly commended for its entry.

Next was the Best Implementation of a Risk Management Strategy Award, recognising those who added value to their businesses function through the successful implementation of a strategy.

Leighton Contractors again walked away with the winner’s trophy, with City of Swan highly commended.

The third award of the night was The Risk Individual Pathfinder Award. From a strong field which included Qantas’ CRO Rob Kella and John de Groot of State Water Corporation, Angela Seidel of Goodman Fielder won top prize.

John de Groot was highly commended is this category.

Judges commended Seidel’s dedication to the industry and progress she has made in developing a risk culture within Goodman Fielder.

The Risk Management Evolution Award saw Leighton Contractors take home its third gong of the evening, this time for its Northern Region Construction Division.

Qantas Airways was unlikely to miss out, picking up the highly commended prize for its journey to create an organisation-wide operational risk management function.

The evening was wrapped up with The Risk Enterprise of the Year Award. Leighton Contractors missed out on their fourth award of the night and had to settle for highly commended, while the team from Qantas Airways took first prize.

The Qantas team demonstrated great ability to partner the business to help maintain safe and secure outcomes in an inherently risky industry.

A full round-up of the night’s events will be published in the September issue of Risk magazine, complete with pictures of all the winners.
